Isn’t Age Just a Number?

05 Jul

Chivas Brothers, who own a variety of distilleries (including The Glenlivet), reached out to inform me that they have started a campaign to educate the public about the meaning of age statements on whisky. Very few people understand that the age refers to the minimum age of any component in that bottle. There is no requirement that all the whisky in the bottle be the same age. That would be too restrictive.

If you think about it, this is the only way to define age that doesn’t allow for misleading practices.

Only 10% of those polled knew the correct definition of an age statement. After reading this, and by checking out the new “Guaranteed Age Whisky” promotion (courtesy of Chivas Brothers), you now know more about whisky age statements than 90% of the population. Congratulations!

Don’t keep it a secret…tell a friend so we can swell the ranks of the informed! 🙂
